The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has established the National Broadband Alliance for Nigeria (NBAN). This initiative is aimed at increasing broadband adoption and utilization within critical public institutions, including schools, hospitals, government offices, libraries, and markets.
In a recent white paper, the Ministry outlined the purpose of the Alliance, which seeks to address low internet consumption and the resulting poor return on investment in the nation’s fiber n etwork. It is also designed to encourage collaboration among stakeholders to position Nigeria as a leader in the global digital economy.
A Multi-Stakeholder Initiative
The Ministry highlighted that the NBAN is a collaborative platform involving public and private sector stakeholders, civil society organizations, and government agencies. The alliance’s goals include:
- Creating sustainable business models to drive internet adoption in critical public institutions.
- Facilitating resource sharing and coordinated efforts to support broadband expansion nationwide.
- Collaborating with sub-national governments and regulatory bodies to address deployment challenges and streamline processes.
With support from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the national level, NBAN will work closely with state governments, which will host alliance nodes, to drive progress. The Alliance will also work to promote digital inclusion and awareness, ensuring equitable access to broadband connectivity for all segments of society.
Implementation and Pilot Phase
The pilot phase of the initiative is scheduled to begin in seven states Edo, Ogun, Kwara, Katsina, Imo, Abia, Borno, and Nasarawa by the end of the first quarter of 2024. These states were chosen based on their broadband infrastructure, including efforts to manage fiber optic challenges, such as the waiver of Right of Way fees.
The NBAN will also collaborate with international organizations to leverage expertise and resources, adopting a phased approach aligned with the National Broadband Plan’s short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
